If you can’t beat ‘em…

Recently I’ve been playing the “Werewolves / Vampires / Zombies / Slayers” game on facebook.  Right now I only have a Werewolf and a Zombie… I may add more later.  Anyway, I was searching the internet for ways to add more people to my army and found this post about zombies.  I couldn’t agree more.

When I was a kid I wasn’t scared of Vampires or Werewolves because I knew that if one happened into my darkened, textured ceiling bedroom I would simply let them bite me and become one of them myself. This made perfect sense to my 6 year old mind on so many levels.

First off, no more school.  I mean I liked school okay, had friends there, was moderately popular, but what kid — what American kid — wouldn’t get out of school for the rest of their life if given a chance?

Secondly, no more sleeping.  I liked to sleep just as much as the next kid… but there was something about not having to sleep (which I have since learned might not have been the case) that really appealed to me.

Finally, and this was the biggest draw of them all, I would be a monster myself.  Why be scared of something if you can join them?  I would lie in bed thinking of all the other kids I’d get to scare on my nightly house calls.  Some I didn’t like, bullies from school etc., and some I did… trying to get them to join me.

One of my favorite childhood books was “How to Care for Your Monster” by Norman Bridwell.  It was everything I dreamed of and let me know that I didn’t have to wait for a monster to find me, but I could find a monster!  This turned out to be a bit harder than I at first believed it would be.  But, I’m still not afraid of the dark… because if they come, I’ll simply join them.
