The TODAY Show Halloween

In case you missed it today, which I’m sure a lot of you did, this morning on the hosts of NBC’s TODAY show dressed at “The Munsters,” and it was incredible!

Here’s a short little clip from the opening (which they also did an excellent job on).

The Munsters” is something I’ve always wanted to dress up as for Halloween, but have never had the correct theme where it would fit. But, when / if I ever do it, this is now the standard by which I would measure myself by!So I just want to say, “Good job NBC staff, make-up, costume and set guys!

A Halloween Poem

Tis the season for spooks and ghouls, and kids and candy, and dressing up, and having parties, and apples, and jack-o-lanterns, black cats, witches, full moons, goblins, midnight runs, and all sorts of other colorful language. So, with all those wonderful words swimming around in my head I thought I’d write a little poem all about Halloween.

An Ode to Halloween
It’s Halloween!
It’s Halloween!
It’s Halloween!
It’s HAL-LO-WEEEEEEEN!!!

I hope you enjoyed it.

Porter Wagoner Dies

porterwagoner.jpg

Porter Wagoner died today at the age of 80. There’s a story about it on OzarksFirst here, but I wanted to write a post about it because of his (small) relationship to my family. No, he wasn’t an uncle, or even any relative for that matter, but he did date one of my relatives… my mother’s aunt Mildred… my grandma’s sister.

Porter was from West Plains Missouri, where my mom’s family is from. When they were in high school (or sometime around then) he and Mildred dated.

I remember finding this out as a kid and picturing them driving around town in a big limousine with horns on the front of it (like Boss Hog’s car) and him wearing one of his sparkle rhinestone suits. I was, however, only a little disappointed when my mom told me that they dated long before he was famous.

Jason and I saw him about 13 years ago at the Grand Ole Opry and I was hoping they would sit on the edge of the stage after the show (like in Branson) so I could go ask him if he remembered Mildred… who had already passed on at that time… but, alas, they didn’t, so I never got to speak to him and ask him about her. I wonder if they’re riding around in a stretch limousine with sparkle rhinestone suits together now? I like to think they might be.

Buy Our Stuff!

accidentally_cool.jpg

So we started up our own CafePress shop (again). Seems like not a week goes by that I don’t say, “You know what would make a funny t-shirt?” In fact I’ve done it so much that Celeste has started doing it too. So, here’s a place where you can buy some of these crazy ideas.

There are only a few on there now (2 designs so far) but there will be more in weeks to come… unless no body buys them, in which case it will probably just stagnate and then disappear one day… But for now we’re really excited about it!

Featured now is my “I THANK THE GREAT I AM” shirt, which is a play on the cliche “I think therefore I am,” and the one pictured here, “I’m accidentally cool.” We thought of that one while waiting on Cari and Jeremy at the Mudhouse yesterday! Fun stuff! Go buy something!

Wendy’s Hogwarts Pictures

mother_goose_cornelius_fudge.jpg

Wendy Leaumont send us a link to her pictures from the Hogwarts Halloween today.

Wendy came as Serena from Bewitched, and her husband (our friend) Dave came as Tim the Enchanter, from Monty Python’s Holy Grail. He actually made a head piece with real goat horns on it!

Pictured here are my mom and dad as Mother Goose and the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge. There are lots of good ones, so go check them out!

Ron Mueck

ronmueck.jpg

If you’ve not heard of Ron Mueck then you must Google him and /or watch this video.

He is a sculptor, but not in the sense that many of us think of sculptors. His creations employ use of both ultra realism and scale. The scale of his art is a key factor to its impression and often its meaning. Whether over-sized (such as the “Big Man” pictured above) or smaller-than-life, such as his “Two Women Grim” piece, the scale of the work does something to create emotions in us that simple normal sized pieces may fail to do.

If you have a few minutes (30 to be exact) watch this video on him and his “Pregnant Woman” piece. The video is great at showing his process and his skill.

Warning: both the video and his work often contain artistic nudity.

Hogwarts Decorations

We did a lot to decorate and theme the party this year. From hanging jack-o-lanterns with invisible fishing line, to providing a hand made wand (thanks to Mike Teuber) to every guest. One thing we did that helped add to the ambiance and atmosphere was to print a few large Harry Potter theme posters.

Here’s a look at the 3 we made and then had printed. They were each 22 x 34 inches and mounted on foam core.

If you’d like to download the PDFs to print these yourself, please feel free to do so here. If you do use them, please email us and let us know… even send pictures of how you used them. If you link to them, please give us credit. Oh, and the Potion Brew poster is 10 meg… big images.

Springfield WiFi

We were interviewed by KOLR 10 / FOX yesterday from the Mudhouse about using their WiFi and whether or not we would use Springfield’s WiFi downtown once they have better service.

Here’s the interview…
